The statement on the Swoosher this advertisement is trying to make about the environment is that the shoes are environmentally friendly. This advertisement points out that every part of the shoe is made from recycled material, for example the recycled tire shoe. They are trying to go against the corporations and Nike itself because they when they say how to Unswoosh Nike they are saying how to bring them down. Im guessing they think that Nike and other big name corporations make new shoes in a harmful aspect to the environment.

The advertisement is trying to show that the culture we live in now try to make the best kind of product for a cheap or in a way that technology can help out-do the way we used to make shoes. The Swoosher itself is trying to show that we don’t need the most top of the line shoes and still be happy. As you can see in the image they try to make the shoe out of an entire recycled product. So they are helping the environment and giving people what they want for cheaper.

The main features on the Swoosher are the recycled material the whole shoe is made from. The claims made about social and political reality are that the culture we live in today people are wanting the best or they are wanting something that will hold them up. With the way our environment and economy is looking people also are needing things for cheaper that will also help the environment, so it’s a win-win situation for both aspects.

The advertisement navigates the line between a real product and parody on the commercialism of companies such as Nike in the way that the product they are trying to make is competing with all the other companies around them. Nike sells shoes that are high class and what people are wanting and the other shoes are selling for cheaper yet most of the shoes they sell are recycled from possibly Nike shoes. Which if people can buy Nike shoes for cheaper than how is that helping the Nike company.

The advertisement is designed to show you all the materials that are used and how they can help save the environment. The hand drawn anti logo is just showing that they are trying to cut out big corporations from buying material and selling shoes for more money than they need. The advertisement is designed to in a literal sense, get people interested in helping save the environment by buying shoes that are made of recycled material. In a metaphorical sense he is trying to show that we are walking all over our planet by cutting down trees taking yarn and other materials that are not really needed to make new shoes when we have materials that could be recycled to use. This advertisement reflects Adbusters’ political sensibilities because in his ad he is showing an anti corporate attitude towards the bigger companies. He is just taking their shoe and marking out their symbol, which is saying they don’t want them around anymore.

The picture alone would just show that they have a shoe just like any other corporation but with the words around it explaining what each part of the shoe stands for gives a bigger impact on the reader. It really shows what he is trying to advertise in the photo that he isn’t selling a shoe, he is trying to sell the idea about kicking the bigger corporations out like Nike. The shoe can represent Abusters,’ the wording around it can say what they are wanting to do or how they feel about the other corporations.

The Unswoosher logo (marking out the actual logo with a pen) can be seen in two ways. One since the fact that they only used a sharpe or any kind of marker is really showing that they don’t really give a rats butt about the other companies they are really just trying to get rid of the idea they have behind their company. The second reason behind marking out the other companies symbol is to just try to cover up what the bigger companies are doing. The design allows the logo to achieve its message just by covering up the real logo on the shoe with their own, showing that they are just trying to cover up with the other companies are doing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eeEUpJJp9U&feature=related

The Target audience for the advertisement could actually go towards simply people who are not homeless. More clearly it could be going towards parents who have a home because there are children who are living on the streets and it could be trying to get parents or even just adults to help keep the local youth shelters open.

Logos is being used in this advertisement because they are using statistics to show how many children or teens are born that will become homeless someday. They are also using a Pathos appeal because this is the emotional appeal and seeing homeless children on the streets can be very emotional. These appeals would make the audience feel sad or unhappy in some way and make them want to help the children.

One of the main advertising appeals that would strike rather deep in some ones heart would be the need for physiological appeal. This is the need for food, drink and sleep which can be very difficult for a homeless person to have. In the advertisement they could try to show how people in general have all these physiological needs at hand but are very hard to get when homeless. Another advertising appeal that I found on a website is the “Less than perfect appeal”. This could be showing that no matter how much money you have or if you are living on the streets that no one is perfect.

In the video they show pictures of many different homeless children and teens whom have nowhere to go. Seeing some of the pictures of the children who have nothing make you feel upset or even sad enough to the point to help them. Also you can see that the photos are in black and white which can also point more towards a dark or sadden time period, rather than color happy time.

Yes, people could find this video to be very stereotypical in a way that people might see that all homeless children or even older adults all live this way. I mean yes the homeless don’t really have it easy but not all homeless people live on the streets or under a tree. That’s why communities have homeless shelters to help get the homeless people off the streets.

Yes this video could clearly hit home for people outside the targeted audience. As a college student I thought this video was very sad and wanted to help the children find a place to live. It could also make sense to younger kids because they could see that this could happen to anyone even kids their own age.

I think the Ad that they made can be very effective just because all together it really hits home. The sappy music along with the pictures of the young children not having anywhere to live can really make people want to help give them a safe place to live. Overall it does a very nice job of getting the point across while giving some kind of statistics and making a person feel sad enough to want to help.

Title: Break the Habit

In the poster that I chose the creator, New York Department of Health, is trying to get people to stop smoking. This poster was made in the 1980’s which was a big time for smokers to start smoking. In movies from the mid 1980’s on through to the 90’s show that smoking was something to do more for a recreational thing. Not many people knew that smoking was something that would harm your lungs and body. The graphic design of the shattered glass with the cigarette behind it can be very visual for one smoking may shatter your life to pieces and two in a literal sense can it can be harmful to you. In another sense of the broken glasses could appeal to breaking the habit of smoking. Broken glass can symbolize many different aspects behind stopping a habit of some sort. This advertisement can appeal to the need to aggress in the way that in the real world smoking can harm people in many ways to the extent of death. This poster could be the breaking point from someone realizing that smoking is bad and they need to stop or something could bad could happen. A more basic appeal would be the need to escape because most people smoke cigarettes now to escape from stress and the feeling of pressure. Of course this Ad is trying to pull you away from smoking but some people could see this ad as a “if you smoke you will break free from stress or other feelings”. Lastly the need to satisfy curiosity is a feeling people get when they want to try new things. Smoking in the 80’s was new to some people mainly high school students and they were curious to smoke.

Research Paper Ideas:

I have not yet thought to much about what I am wanting to write on. I know you said not to take what we have done in the past but there are many topics that I had to hold myself back on in high school. Always having to agree with the other side just to show respect for the opposites. So I might follow up on one of the idea’s I had and branch off into a more detailed view. If I decide to travel down a different path of ideas then I may follow up on a religous background for my decision. I have always been a religious nut when it comes to my faith and I know what I am talking about when it comes to it. I have not yet decided on what I really want to write my paper on but I do have many ideas running through my head to follow up on it. I also have the ideas behing certain Architecture beliefs and how they come across designing homes. the thoughts from certain architects and my own. what they believe to have failed and passed attempts on designing homes. I will think about it more and let you know a topic in an up coming conference.

Questions: Are we aloud to use people as resource’s?

Source: A New Assignment: Pick Books You Like, August 30th, 2009, Motoko Rich.

List each claim made in argument: It would be more helpful for students to choose there own books. Students would learn more when reading what they want rather than having the teachers choose books for them. It would also help them with standardized testing.

Data used to support each claim: Better test’s scores, more involved in reading and class work, and they would challenge themselves rather than have to teacher do it.

Identify the warrants: Reading is a good thing!

Backing of warrants: students are finding what they have in common with the literary culture. It is more helpful to the students when picking out their own book. From a students point of view they would have to really enjoy the books or get scarred into reading them. Like, fail to get into college.

List of qualifiers: Some books are gonna have to be assigned. Other books can be chosen buy the student as long as they are for their reading level. The lady who bought all the books spent a lot of money, that would mean even more for teachers around the country. Some kids might fail but they will have to just keep working at it.

List any rebuttals: The community is not built, which means even if that one teacher said it worked not everyone would want to follow in her foot steps. Ms. McNeill knew she didn’t succeed in persuading all the students to read but she did get many of the students reading.

Overall: I could see this both ways, I see it as a good argument because students are learning to like reading more than they would if they just had it spoon fed to them. They are also choosing books that interest them so they would want to continue reading the older they get. I could also see it as a failed attempt because the other teachers around the country may not have the same outlook as she did. It may be a personal view to read certain books, and it could also be students being pier pressured into reading certain books. They may feel obligated to read books of a higher reading level. Students can’t start off reading books like Moby Dick, they have to start small. “You have to walk before you can Run.”
